The earliest public mention of Christmas V Mastermind is believed to be an article from The Times dated 3 December 1962; this adds credence to Alan Ayckbourn’s statement there was little to no advertising for the show and it was announced far too late to attract school bookings. Interestingly the title is not the same - Father Christmas Versus The Master Mind; it is not known if this was an error on the part of the journalist or the original title for the play. This marked the final appearance of the playwright in one of his own plays and the first time the actress Heather Stoney - who would later marry Alan Ayckbourn - appeared in an Ayckbourn world premiere.
